The Case against Streamlined RCM

As the result of growing popularity of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), many variants emerge to claim the title as the best RCM approach. In this paper published in 2000, John Moubray tries to clarify what RCM is (and what it is not), and the different approaches taken by the so called “streamlined RCM” versions and their implications. This paper also note the existence of SAE-JA1011, a standard which can be used to guide maintenance organizations in selecting the “right” RCM variant.

Many maintenance organizations throughout the world, as well as in Indonesia, have tried to hastily implement an RCM variant which they thought to be the simplest and have the quickest return without fully understanding their implications.

If you or your organizations are planning to or in the process of implementing a process perceived to be RCM, then I would strongly recommend you to read this paper.
