Managing on Purpose

Author : Mark Reich
Category : Lean Management Book
Synopsis
This book discusses Hoshin Kanri, a strategic management system from Japan that Toyota has used since the early 1960s as part of the total quality control movement. Mark Reich wrote this book based on his twenty-three years of experience working at Toyota, including seven years managing the Hoshin Kanri process in the Corporate Strategy Division for the North America region.
Mark Reich presents the material through a fictional case study: a manufacturing company called TrueMowers, which combines his experience supporting various organizations in implementing Hoshin Kanri. The story follows the TrueMowers leadership team as they develop Hoshin from the enterprise level down to departments, execute the strategy while developing leaders, conduct reflection and adjustment at midyear, and maintain the sustainability of the system over the long term.
The book is divided into seven parts that follow the full-year Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle: identifying the organization’s starting point, setting company and departmental Hoshin objectives, executing while developing leadership capabilities, reflecting on midyear and year-end results, and designing process sustainability for the following year. Each section includes worksheets, templates, and practical tools. The appendix adds another case study on the implementation of Hoshin Kanri at Turner Construction.
This book is intended for organizational leaders in manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and government who want to connect executive-level strategy with concrete action on the ground. The Hoshin Kanri approach presented by Mark Reich differs from target-based management alone. The process requires two-way alignment between leaders and teams, develops the thinking of every member of the organization, and builds a learning culture through the cycle of continuous improvement.
This Indonesian edition provides access to the Hoshin Kanri methodology for readers and organizations in Indonesia that are developing their own strategic management systems.
